| Laptops are prime targets when left in your parked
car: a veritable gift for your average opportunist thief. Flexysafe
has come up with a car-based security solution for laptop computers
or other mobile computer equipment in the shape of a portable,
aluminium armour-plated safe.
There are three versions available. The safe we looked at in this
review was Flexysafe Pro, introduced to the mobile security market
this year. The company describes the product as lightweight.
However, at 8kg, it isn’t exactly feather-like. The very bulk of the
safe would intimidate thieves and anything placed inside would be
well and truly hidden from the uninvited eye.
The standard internal measurements are 450mm (length), 135mm
(width) and 367mm (height). The powder coat black-coloured safes can
be custom made to a particular size and specification on request,
which gives some flexibility. The Pro comes with a seven-lever lock
mechanism but no bolts or screws.
The fixing method is by means of a metre and a half long, fabric
covered hardened steel strap that measures about 4cm across. This
impressive looking cable weighs over 3kg alone and looks like the
sort of thing you would use to secure your motorbike.
The system is designed so that the device can be secured to an
anchor point found in most cars: either behind the passenger seat or
in the boot. Two keys are supplied: one for the cable lock and one
for the safe casing. Anyone withoutthese keys would find it tricky
to remove the safe from its anchorage point without being
disturbed.

| FOR A heavyweight solution
for site offices and commercial vehicle
fleets. |
| AGAINST The mass and price
of the device would not suit
everyone. |
| VERDICT A reliable,
resistant security solution. |

The unit comes with quite a nice feature: a charger unit cable
access hole that means electrical items can be recharged while
locked in the safe. Handy when you’re on the road. Relocation from
the car to the office or home environments is a possibility but the
sheer weight of the case does not make it particularly portable. The
product is also quite expensive for most tastes.
Another version of this security case that retails at a lower
price of £95 is the Flexysafe Utility, which offers commercial
vehicle fleets a solution for protecting laptops and other expensive
equipment out in the field. Similar in build and size, this safe
bolts directly into commercial vehicles.
The Flexysafe Utility has a two-fold benefit: the safe helps
protect against theft and accidental damage, and in order to
recharge any equipment, security-lax engineers are forced to house
the equipment inside the casing. Both would be suited to larger
scale operations where insurance costs could be considerably reduced
by investing in something like the Flexysafe security cases.
